Redefining Addiction: Will Krause's Path to Hope and Understanding
Episode Overview
Addiction as a learned coping mechanism and the importance of understanding one's behavior Challenging the traditional perception of addicts and reframing their exceptional skills Embracing hope and finding purpose as crucial elements in the journey to sobriety Debunking the disease model of addiction and advocating for a shift in societal attitudes The significance of community support and empowerment in the pursuit of an alcohol-free life
The average person cannot come home from work, drink a bottle of wine, feel like crap the next day and be successful at work and have no one know what was going on with it. That's a skill. And you learn that skill. Now, is it a maladaptive skill because you're drinking that wine? Yeah, it's causing a painful thing. So once you get to an addict to see that they're not abnormal, that they're not ostracized from society, that they have skills, especially now in the 21st century, that society is clamoring for, to be emotionally intelligent enough to be able to talk to other people and know why they're doing what they're doing, to be empathetic, to feel their pain, and to actually want to do something about that pain. Almost every addict has that. And if you can give that person that hope.
What if everything you thought you knew about addiction was turned on its head? In this episode of Tribe Sober, host Janet Gourand welcomes Will Krause, an author, entrepreneur, and academic who’s made it his mission to help addicts not just quit but thrive. Krause’s journey began with the tragic loss of his younger brother to addiction, which led him to question the conventional wisdom surrounding substance abuse.
Rather than seeing addiction as a disease, Krause views it as a coping mechanism and believes understanding the 'why' behind people's actions is key to meaningful change. His academic pursuits and personal experiences have shaped his unique perspective on addiction and recovery. Krause’s insights are not just theoretical; they’re deeply personal and practical, offering a roadmap for anyone looking to lead a fulfilling, alcohol-free life.
This episode dives into the complexities of addiction, the importance of purpose, and the extraordinary potential within every individual. Whether you're struggling with addiction yourself or supporting someone who is, Krause's story provides a fresh lens through which to view the journey to sobriety.
