Lazaren Mendoza: Dancing Through Life's Toughest Battles

Sometimes I didn't like it, because I felt like it was almost like some of those people that were there and they had a lot of clean time. But then, I started going to Bomba class, and from the first time I took the first class, I knew that that's what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.
Growing up in San Francisco's Mission District, Lazaren Mendoza faced more than her fair share of challenges. Born to a Mexican father and Peruvian mother, her childhood was marked by the separation of her artist and activist parents. Despite the turbulence, Lazaren found herself captivated by the empowered cholas and zoot suiters she saw around her. However, the streets also introduced her to gangs, drugs, and addiction, leading her down a difficult path.
In this heartfelt episode of The Gris Alves Podcast, Lazaren opens up about her tumultuous journey and how she found a lifeline in Bomba dance. This Afro-Puerto Rican dance form became more than just a hobby; it was her salvation. Through Bomba, she rediscovered her sense of purpose and began to heal from her past. Lazaren’s story is a powerful testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the transformative power of art.
Her journey underscores the importance of finding solace in what you love and the strength that comes from community support. Tune in to hear Lazaren's inspiring tale of courage, recovery, and the dance that helped her reclaim her life.
