I can only give you my version and whenever people come are happier or less happy or whatever they are then that's coming from their place and that's their um that's their way and I would have you know probably been a similar pre pre all of this period I can't I don't want to to put people off by being this judge but but it's it's it's definitely a place there's perfectly been pigeonholed and I wonder if it's been pigeonholed by the sort of alcohol society people on purpose to make it look crap option
Imagine growing up in a home where alcohol is a constant presence, shaping your childhood and leaving lasting scars. That's the reality Cate, a 48-year-old artist from Oxford, faced. In this episode of 'Voices of Sobriety: Real People, Real Recovery', Cate opens up about her journey from a turbulent past to a sober present. Raised by a functioning alcoholic father, Cate's early years were filled with confusion and emotional upheaval.
She reflects on how societal norms in the 70s and 80s masked the true impact of heavy drinking, making it difficult for families to seek help or even recognize the problem. But Cate's story doesn't end in despair. A pivotal moment came when a close friend was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015, followed by Cate's own diagnosis a year later. This life-altering event prompted her to reassess her relationship with alcohol.
Despite medical professionals still encouraging moderate drinking, Cate chose a different path after an uneventful family weekend in Bournemouth. She decided to quit drinking, marking the beginning of her transformative journey to sobriety. Throughout the podcast, Cate candidly discusses the emotional and financial benefits of her sober life. She also highlights the changing attitudes towards sobriety, especially among younger generations, and stresses the importance of diverse support systems.
Cate's story is not just about overcoming addiction; it's about finding hope and resilience amidst life's challenges. Her openness and genuine desire to help others make this episode a must-listen for anyone facing similar struggles or seeking inspiration on their own path to sobriety.
