Finding Light in Darkness: Fr Tom's Take on Blessings and Recovery
As we're on the journey, as we're trudging the road, anything that gets behind us and pushes us ahead, anything that gets in front of us and drags us into the next set of circumstances, anything that gets down deep inside of us, where it's cold and brittle and narrow, and pushes and shoves and kicks and breaks until suddenly there's much more room and a lot more light, anything that does that said, the rabbi is a blessing, and sometimes blessings don't feel very good, and sometimes we don't know it's a blessing for Years, until we look back on a situation that we knew was going to kill us and we find out that instead it opened up doors that we never even knew were there.
What if the hardest moments in life were actually blessings in disguise? In this episode of the Recovery Crone Podcast, Fr Tom offers a fresh perspective on what it means to be blessed. Drawing from his own journey with alcoholism, Fr Tom uses his unique teaching style—rooted in the rabbinical tradition of answering questions with stories—to explore how blessings can lead to profound personal growth.
Fr Tom starts by recounting the story of creation, where everything God made was 'tov'—whole and complete—except for humans, who were left 'real undone' with empty spaces and jagged edges. He suggests that blessings are those experiences that push us forward, even when they break us open, making room for more light and growth. Sometimes, these blessings don't feel good at first, but they open doors we never knew existed.
Sharing his own story, Fr Tom reveals how his struggle with alcoholism became the greatest blessing of his life. It transformed him from a person filled with despair and cynicism into someone capable of love, work, and play. He emphasizes the importance of taking recovery one day at a time and finding community support through AA meetings. Fr Tom wraps up with a poignant New York AA saying: 'keep coming back.
First it gets better, then it gets worse, then it gets real, then it gets different, then it gets real different and real'. This episode is a heartfelt exploration of how the toughest challenges can become the most significant blessings, offering hope and inspiration for anyone on the path to recovery.
