Matt J.: From Darkness to Light - A Sobriety Journey

Considering his background, Matt's success in Alcoholics Anonymous is evidence of the healing and gifts AA holds for those who really want it and who are willing to do the work.
Imagine growing up in a household where chaos and abuse were the norm. For Matt J., this was his reality. His family tree was riddled with problem drinkers, and he quickly followed suit. As an only child, Matt found solace in locking himself away with books and baseball cards, but these coping mechanisms evolved into something far more destructive as he discovered alcohol in his teenage years.
Alcohol became his escape from isolation, fear, and shame, a pattern that persisted through college and into his early career. Despite moments of self-reflection where he questioned his drinking habits, Matt's dependency on alcohol deepened, leading to severe consequences for his marriage and job. At his lowest point, thoughts of suicide loomed large, compounded by a diagnosis of clinical depression and financial ruin.
In 2014, backed into a corner with nowhere else to turn, Matt entered the rooms of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). This episode of AA Recovery Interviews takes you through Matt's candid recounting of his journey to sobriety. He discusses the profound impact AA had on his life, the importance of service work, and the invaluable support from the AA community. Matt's story is one of transformation, resilience, and the power of seeking help.
If you're struggling with addiction or supporting someone who is, this episode offers a beacon of hope and practical insights into the path to recovery.
