Sarah M's Journey: From Anorexia to 26 Years Sober
There are a lot of people, though I know that they would say: zoom is just not my thing, and I'd have to say: well, if it's between zoom and no meeting, you know that to me is a pretty clear choice
Picture this: a young girl battling anorexia and bulimia long before she even touches a drop of alcohol. That’s how Sarah M’s story begins. Growing up in a relatively happy family with little exposure to alcohol, Sarah’s struggles with self-esteem and body image issues set the stage for her later battles with addiction. By the age of 16, she discovered alcohol as a temporary escape, but it quickly led her down a darker path.
College dreams were cut short, and she found herself mixing alcohol with cocaine and crystal meth, spiraling further into chaos. Fortunately, Sarah had an earlier brush with recovery through her eating disorder treatment, which left her with a valuable friend who nudged her towards Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). Despite some initial setbacks, she embraced the AA program in 1996 and hasn’t looked back since.
Her early commitment to AA even allowed her to work safely in a bar while saving up for an education that eventually led her out of that environment. In this episode of 'AA Recovery Interviews', Sarah opens up about her 26-year journey of sobriety. She talks candidly about the hurdles she faced, including her husband’s cancer diagnosis just three years into their marriage.
Through it all, Sarah found inner peace and strength by doing esteemable things and staying true to the AA principles. She also discusses the importance of anonymity in AA and how her sobriety has positively impacted those around her. Sarah’s story is a testament to the power of resilience and the transformative impact of the AA program. If you or someone you know is grappling with alcoholism, Sarah’s journey might just be the beacon of hope you need.
