I didn't realize that there was a lot of intangible things that I would get. Things like loving myself, not wanting to kill myself, self-worth, self-esteem, the ability to be selfless and get a sense of enjoyment of helping others.
Imagine growing up in a household where addiction was the norm. That's the reality Jared Klickstein faced, with both parents deeply entrenched in heroin use. Despite the chaos, they managed to parent him until they were arrested when he was just 12. Jared's life took a dramatic turn as he moved in with his aunt, only to lose his mother to heroin addiction two years later.
This loss pushed him towards alcohol as a coping mechanism, marking the beginning of his own struggle with addiction. By 15, Jared was a 'functioning alcoholic', and by 18, he had moved on to Oxycontin, thinking it was safe because it was a pharmaceutical product. Little did he know, it was akin to heroin, and soon he found himself addicted and eventually switching to heroin itself. While alcohol gave him the confidence to socialize, heroin numbed his feelings completely.
Jared's descent into addiction led to severe consequences—losing his possessions, becoming homeless, and serving lengthy jail sentences. In this episode of Tribe Sober, he candidly shares his experiences with various rehab facilities, contrasting for-profit centers with state-funded ones. His story is one of resilience and hope, underscoring the importance of community support and the transformative power of seeking help. Jared's journey is not just about overcoming addiction; it's about advocating for positive change in the rehab industry.
He emphasizes humility, connection, and the critical role of finding a supportive tribe. This episode is a compelling reminder that recovery is possible and that the right support can make all the difference.
