So much of my recovery has been learning how to get in touch with my anger. Anger is our protection. Without anger, we have no protection. Yet we fear the anger within us because there's so much stored up. There's a part of me that feels if you tap my anger, I am going to lose control and my rage is going to become uncontrollable, just like the people who raised me. When their anger got tapped and they lost control, I was no longer human. I was an object.
Ever felt like you were born into a role that just doesn’t fit? In this eye-opening episode, Joe Ryan takes a deep dive into the concept of family systems and the heavy expectations they place on us. Building on his earlier discussion about family shame, Joe unpacks how these systems dictate our behavior, emotions, and even our public persona. Imagine being stuck in a mold where you constantly seek approval but never feel quite enough.
Joe shares his personal journey of grappling with these pressures and the emotional toll it took on him. He talks about how these toxic family dynamics often lead to anxiety, trauma, and unhealthy coping mechanisms like substance abuse. But it’s not all doom and gloom. Joe emphasizes the importance of acknowledging all your emotions, even the uncomfortable ones like anger, as a crucial step towards healing.
He discusses how dismantling these family roles and embracing your true self can lead to a more authentic and fulfilling life. Whether you're struggling with similar issues or just curious about the impact of family dynamics, this episode offers valuable insights and practical advice. Joe's candid storytelling and heartfelt advice make it a must-listen for anyone looking to break free from the chains of family expectations.
