Sam Delaney: Embracing Sobriety and Mental Health with a Smile

But you know it is there and it's available to everyone. But even if you're not ready for that yet- the principle of sharing and being a bit more open about what you're going through- you will be amazed by the amount of empathy and kindness that you experience, sometimes from the least likely people, once you open up about this stuff, and then all the shame you feel and the isolation and loneliness you feel will quickly disappear and in fact, your perception of life will change very quickly into one.
What if sobriety could bring more joy than you ever imagined? Sam Delaney, a journalist and broadcaster, joins Janet on Tribe Sober to share his story of finding happiness in an alcohol-free life. Sam's drinking began at the tender age of 12, sneaking warm beers from his parents' stash to the park with friends. It seemed like harmless fun, just a part of growing up.
But as the years rolled on, what started as a pastime turned into a habit that left him feeling miserable. He never saw himself as having a problem until he couldn't ignore the unhappiness any longer. That's when he reached out for help and discovered the modern recovery movement and a supportive sober community. Now seven years sober, Sam hosts his own podcast, The Reset, where he discusses mental health, addiction, and recovery.
He's also penned a book, 'Sort Your Head Out - Mental Health…without the Bollocks', which tackles these topics with honesty and humor. In this episode, Sam talks about how sharing his struggles brought unexpected empathy and kindness from others, helping to dissolve feelings of shame and isolation. If you're curious about how sobriety can lead to a happier life, Sam's story might just inspire you to take that first step.
