Frank Richards: Crafting Change and Recovery on the Hoopa Valley Reservation

Sobriety, recovery, you know, wellness, all that, and I don't mean to diminish this at all, but it's kind of been uncool, you know, I mean the first couple of times I was in treatment, everybody in there was uncool, you know, and I didn't belong there, and that was defensive and, you know, pretty hostile about it. It's cool to get clean and sober, it's cool to get educated. Try to build your capacity of what you have and be valuable.
Ever wondered how a simple structure can change lives? In this episode of 'Recovery Talks', Lea sits down with Frank Richards, the visionary behind Building Lives by Building Structure. This non-profit organization is dedicated to creating sustainable change and combating poverty on the Hoopa Valley Tribal reservation. Frank opens up about his personal recovery journey and how it led him to empower others through education and practical initiatives.
From building sheds and smokehouses to picnic tables, Frank’s team is making a tangible difference in their community. He also dives into the crucial topics of decolonizing education and assimilation, emphasizing the importance of providing opportunities for young people. This episode is a testament to the power of sobriety, education, and community-driven efforts. Tune in to hear how Frank and his team are building more than just structures—they're building hope and resilience.
