I realized, gosh, if I would have binged, it wouldn't have helped me cope with life. It would only have quieted those urges because they made me feel so uncomfortable. There were so many thoughts and feelings and physical sensations that just made me feel like I had to binge just to make that go away.
Ever wondered how our brains drive us to binge on food or alcohol? In this episode of 'The Alcohol ReThink Podcast', Patrick Fox sits down with Kathryn Hansen, the author and podcast host behind 'Brain Over Binge'. Kathryn shares her remarkable story of overcoming binge eating, a struggle she conquered in 2005, and has since dedicated her life to helping others do the same.
Her unique approach, which challenges conventional therapy methods, offers a fresh perspective on breaking free from harmful habits. Kathryn and Patrick dive into the nitty-gritty of how dieting can actually trigger eating disorders and the role our primitive brain plays in survival instincts that drive us to overeat or overdrink. They also discuss the importance of understanding and managing the desire to binge, rather than just trying to suppress it.
Kathryn's insights into how we rationalize our behaviors and the concept of 'feast or famine'—how our brains are wired for food scarcity—are eye-opening. One standout moment is Kathryn's take on recovery: it's not about erasing every problem but learning to cope in healthier ways. She highlights the idea that 'you drink to cope with not drinking', a powerful reminder of the complexities of addiction.
Throughout the episode, Kathryn's vulnerability and honesty create a sense of camaraderie, reassuring listeners that they're not alone in their struggles. Patrick's gratitude for Kathryn's contributions underscores the impactful nature of their conversation. If you're looking to understand more about the brain's role in habits and recovery, this episode is a must-listen.
