Project Peace: Youth Leading the Charge for Community Safety

I really believe that young people are a force to be reckoned with, and what I mean by that is that the power that you guys possess in terms of letting us, as adults, know what's important to you is really really impactful.
Imagine being a high school student and witnessing the tragic loss of four classmates to gun violence in a single year. This harsh reality sparked a movement at Reading High School in Pennsylvania, where students founded Project Peace in 2010. The initiative aims to foster peace and non-violence among young people and adults alike.
In this episode of 'Your Bridge To Addiction Resources', we hear from Tyzehna, a senior at Reading High and a passionate member of Project Peace, as she shares the group's inspiring journey and mission. Project Peace began as a small club at Reading High but quickly expanded to include middle schools in the area. Tyzehna explains how the group meets monthly to brainstorm ideas and strategies to create a safer community.
Their activities range from Peace Marches and mentoring elementary school kids to presenting their ideas to city council and board members. The group's proactive approach ensures that they are involved in every aspect of community improvement. One of the key themes discussed in this episode is youth empowerment. Tyzehna highlights how Project Peace provides a platform for young people to voice their concerns and be heard.
Through mentoring younger kids, organizing plays, and sharing personal stories, these students are not just participants but leaders in their community. The shoe events, where members wear shoes representing their backgrounds and share their stories on stage, are particularly poignant, offering a unique way for young people to connect and inspire one another.
The episode also touches on the Youth Leadership Initiative, with Tyzehna recounting her experience at the Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America's National Youth Leadership Initiative in Las Vegas. This program further empowered her and her peers to understand their community's needs and work towards meaningful change. Tyzehna emphasizes the importance of young voices in shaping policies that affect their lives, proving that youth can indeed be a formidable force for good.
Project Peace is more than just an organization; it's a testament to the power of young people to drive positive change. Through their dedication and diverse activities, they promote peace and non-violence, making their community a safer place for everyone. Tune in to hear Tyzehna's inspiring story and learn how Project Peace is making a real difference.
