I truly believed that if I killed myself because I didn’t see myself coming out of alcoholism at that point I believed that him and the kids would be better off rather than my kids having to grow up with an alcoholic mother and my husband with an alcoholic wife.
In this episode of 'One Day I Decided', host Amanda Patricia chats with Kenzie, a remarkable businesswoman and mother of twin boys. Kenzie’s story is a powerful journey from addiction to sobriety, revealing the raw and often misunderstood aspects of recovery. Growing up in a family plagued by addiction, Kenzie swore she’d never fall into the same trap. Yet, by age 13, she was already drinking heavily.
Her teenage years were marked by DUIs and a deepening struggle with alcohol and drugs. Despite the chaos, Kenzie managed to maintain a facade of normalcy, working as a surgical tech while battling her demons in secret. Things took a dramatic turn when Kenzie became pregnant with twins. For the first time in years, she experienced a prolonged period of sobriety, which brought clarity and happiness. However, postpartum anxiety soon crept in, leading her back to alcohol.
The tipping point came during the COVID-19 pandemic when her husband suffered a near-fatal accident. Kenzie found herself caring for twin toddlers and a bedridden husband while sinking deeper into alcoholism. Her breaking point arrived when she entered a Zoom meeting for recovering addicts, hiding her drinks from the camera. It was there that she first admitted out loud that she was an alcoholic. This moment of vulnerability marked the beginning of her journey to sobriety.
With the support of her husband, who also chose to get sober, and a newfound community of supportive women, Kenzie embraced her authentic self. Today, Kenzie is thriving both personally and professionally. She has built a successful business and enjoys a fulfilling family life. Her story is a testament to the strength and resilience required to overcome addiction and find true happiness. If you’re looking for an inspiring tale of recovery and self-discovery, this episode is a must-listen.
