Tom O'Connor: From Wall Street Success to Sobriety Advocate
You know, I've got years sobriety and sometimes I can get the attitude of I don't really need to go to a meeting.
Tom O'Connor's life story is nothing short of riveting. Growing up as the youngest of nine children in New York, Tom faced immense challenges from an early age. His mother struggled with alcoholism, and several of his brothers followed a similar path. When Tom was just 12, his father passed away, leaving a void that his stepdad tried to fill, eventually helping Tom make it to college. Despite his academic achievements, Tom's battle with alcohol continued.
He graduated and landed a job on Wall Street, becoming a self-made millionaire by 30. Yet, behind this façade of success, his personal life was crumbling. Tom's rock bottom came when he fell from a six-story building, ending up in the hospital. Surprisingly, this wasn't the wake-up call he needed.
It took another three years and a poignant moment with his six-month-old daughter in the back seat of his car for Tom to realize he didn't want to follow in his mother's footsteps. That was the turning point. Now, with 33 years of sobriety under his belt, Tom dedicates his life to helping others achieve the same freedom from addiction.
In this episode, Tim Westbrook and Tom delve into the impact of childhood trauma on addiction and the pivotal role of support systems like AA and ACA in recovery. Tom emphasizes the importance of therapy, daily routines, and staying connected to the recovery community. His journey is a powerful reminder that even in the darkest times, hope and change are possible.
