Living Big in a Tiny House: Sophie Jungbauer's Sustainable Journey

I think that everyone who has attempted low waste or knows about the movement realizes that there are a lot of challenges, and so we kind of strive to do our best.
Ever wondered what it's like to live in a tiny house? Sophie Jungbauer knows firsthand. In this episode of the Hippie Haven Podcast, Sophie takes us through her life in a 28-foot tiny home on wheels in Northern Minnesota, where she lives with her husband, Henry, and their dog, Cora. Their choice to downsize was driven by a desire to live more intentionally and sustainably.
Sophie’s adventure into tiny house living began after attending a talk by Dee Williams, author of 'The Big Tiny'. Inspired by the idea, Sophie and her husband decided to build their own tiny home. They invested all their extra time and money into creating their dream space, which now serves as a testament to their commitment to sustainable living. Living in a tiny house isn't without its challenges.
Sophie shares some of the hurdles they’ve faced, like finding space for seasonal clothing and managing a composting toilet. But these challenges are outweighed by the benefits. For instance, their composting toilet uses coconut coir to stay odor-free, and they’ve found creative ways to conserve energy, such as using a mini split system and relying on natural light during the day. One of the most compelling parts of Sophie’s story is how it challenges the traditional American dream.
Instead of a big house with a white picket fence, Sophie and her husband have chosen a simpler, more sustainable lifestyle. They’ve embraced off-grid living, even sourcing fresh eggs from a nearby chicken farmer. When they need alone time, they simply take a walk or go for a run with Cora. Sophie's journey is about more than just living in a tiny house; it's about living by your values and making intentional choices.
Her story is inspiring and hopeful, showing that with passion and determination, you can create a life that aligns with your ideals. Tune in to this episode of the Hippie Haven Podcast to hear more about Sophie's experiences and get inspired to rethink what the American dream means to you.
