Rewiring the Brain: Eliza Fernandes on Combating Loneliness and Trauma

I think the biggest piece is- and I'm very aware of this when I'm doing at the front end of therapy, when you're getting a sense of someone's history, is I really gauge? Not to give me detailed information, because the reality is when you share your experience, which happens in talk therapy, you go into your story, you go into your experience, you don't realize that you're actually going into a possible reliving of that distress, and so that's what makes you feel worse about yourself- is that you're talking about your experience and you're looking at restoring your experience.
Feeling isolated can do more than just dampen your mood; it can seriously impact your brain health. In this eye-opening episode of 'Naturally High', Jeanne Foot welcomes Eliza Fernandes, a seasoned psychotherapist, to explore the deep-seated effects of loneliness and isolation. With an impressive background in trauma therapy, including EMDR and clinical hypnosis, Eliza brings a wealth of knowledge to the table.
Eliza delves into her personal journey and shares how her work with adolescents and individuals in the criminal justice system shaped her approach to trauma therapy. She emphasizes the importance of understanding intergenerational trauma and how our attachment needs, especially in early development, play a crucial role in our mental well-being. The conversation takes a fascinating turn as Eliza discusses how integrating the brainstem and midbrain can aid in therapy.
She highlights the mind-body-spirit connection and stresses the importance of stabilizing before diving into trauma processing. One of the most intriguing points she makes is viewing clients as teachers, encouraging therapists to learn from their experiences. Eliza also touches on the unprecedented challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly on children's mental health.
Her insights offer a fresh perspective on how to reorient our brains and heal from trauma, making this episode a must-listen for anyone interested in mental health and holistic healing. So, if you're grappling with feelings of loneliness or looking to understand trauma better, this episode offers valuable tools and perspectives to help you on your journey.
