Step 9: Making Amends and Finding Peace in Al-Anon

I think that when I'm really self-aware, when I'm really tuned into how I'm feeling about something, if I'm not ready, I don't have to sit there and go into this like crazy loop where I'm like, if I don't make amends to this person, something terrible is going to happen and blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. It's definitely a freeing feeling to make amends- wow, I don't know if I have much to add to what you guys said- really the way it frees me to not be carrying around those rocks, those black holes in my soul.
Making amends can be one of the most challenging steps in any recovery journey, but it's also one of the most rewarding. In this episode of The Recovery Show, hosts Spencer, Kelli, and Swetha dive into Step 9 of the Al-Anon 12-step program, which focuses on making direct amends to those we've harmed, except when it would cause further injury. They share their personal experiences, offering a mix of heartfelt stories and practical advice for anyone navigating this crucial step.
Ever wondered how to know when you're ready to make amends? The hosts tackle this question head-on, discussing the fine line between not wanting to make amends and not being ready. They emphasize the importance of approaching amends without expectations and being open to whatever outcome may arise. Vulnerability is another key theme in this episode. While it can feel like a weakness, the hosts argue that it's actually a courageous act that can lead to deeper connections and healing.
They share how being open and honest with loved ones has transformed their relationships and helped them move forward. Making amends isn't just about saying sorry; it's about taking responsibility for your actions and making things right. The hosts talk about different types of amends, including living amends, where you change your behavior moving forward. This episode is packed with insights that can help you let go of guilt and shame, allowing you to start fresh with a clean slate.
If you're on your own recovery journey or supporting someone who is, this episode offers valuable guidance and inspiration. Tune in to hear how making amends can pave the way for a more serene and fulfilling life.
