I think a lot of it is the sort of job that you get into and then the relationships that you then get exposed to and the culture of that company which for me when I was 26 to nearly 35 I was working in a company that really I wouldn't say promoted drinking but that's an easy way to socialize it's an easy way to network if you're trying to sell something you need those good relationships and it's an easy way to build that connection without really having to get to know someone. It's used a lot and it's also hard day relax that's fine go out come on let's treat ourselves and I guess particularly in London you've got you know like the slanky bars let's go to the rooftop and drink prosecco up there or you know you've got all the different places you can go and just yeah I think in London particularly inner London so not I mean I was living a little bit more in the suburbs probably sort of more uh like Twickenham and Kingston and but when you're kind of in central London it is more glamorous there are a lot more places to go and I can totally see how you easily get caught up in that in your mid-20s
Picture this: Emily, a 32-year-old Personal Assistant from Bristol, takes us through her journey from heavy university drinking to a fulfilling sober life. In this episode of 'Sober Stories from Everyday People', hosted by the ever-empathetic Sassy Sober Mum, Emily opens up about how alcohol initially seemed like a social lubricant but soon turned into a source of anxiety and crippling hangovers. Her story is a vivid reminder of how societal pressures can push us towards unhealthy habits.
Emily's move to Bristol in 2021 was more than just a change of scenery; it was the catalyst for her decision to quit drinking for good in December 2022. She shares how sobriety has given her back control over her life, allowing her to form deeper connections and invest time in herself. Emily didn't stop there—she founded the Instagram page 'sobergalsbristol' to connect with others on the same path, creating a supportive community for those seeking a sober lifestyle.
This episode is a treasure trove of insights into the mental and physical toll of alcohol, the struggles with anxiety, and the importance of finding a supportive network. Whether you're considering sobriety or looking for inspiration to stay on track, Emily's candid account offers both guidance and hope.
