Shelly J: Embracing Culture and Resilience in Recovery

I think it's so beautiful that we get the opportunity to look back on our lives and to take it all in all the beauty, all the hard times, all the grief, and take it all and put it back together and move forward in a new way.
Imagine juggling the roles of a mom, recovery coach, and mentor, all while rediscovering your cultural roots. That's exactly what Shelly J has been doing. In this episode of Avalon Recovery Society Radio, host Leanne Utendale chats with Shelly J, who opens up about her multifaceted journey of recovery. Shelly is not just a sober mom of three; she's also a recovery coach and trainer who’s been exploring her indigenous heritage over the past few years.
Her story is a blend of personal growth, cultural exploration, and the everyday challenges of parenting and relationships in recovery. Shelly's journey began with her seeking help for her addiction after discovering AA literature in a counselor's office. Although she initially found some stability, she faced difficulties in her marriage and parenting her dyslexic children. Feeling out of place in the church environment, she eventually left AA to explore other recovery methods.
One of the most compelling aspects of Shelly's story is her deepening connection to her indigenous culture. Growing up with stories from her mother about residential school, Shelly later found solace and strength in her cultural heritage. She describes the profound experience of smelling sweetgrass and feeling connected to something greater than herself. This cultural exploration has not only enriched her own life but also allowed her to teach others about her heritage.
Parenting in recovery brings its own set of challenges, and Shelly discusses how she navigates these waters, especially as her children deal with their own emotions about her separation from their father. She’s learned the value of staying quiet and asking the right questions, giving her children the space to have their own journeys. Shelly also shares her experience with motivational interviewing, a key tool in recovery coaching that helps others find their own answers.
Throughout it all, Shelly has cultivated a sense of inner wisdom and resilience. She reflects on the beauty of looking back at life’s highs and lows, piecing them together to move forward in a new way. Tune in to Avalon Recovery Society Radio to hear more about Shelly J's inspiring journey and how she's embracing inner wisdom and resilience in recovery.
