The Strength in Asking: James Powell's Path to Recovery

When we start to ask for the help that we need for ourselves, we stand up for love and we start to prioritize mental health, emotional health and spiritual health in our own lives. And when we do it in our own lives, we start to give permission for others to do the same in their lives.
Ever felt like asking for help was a sign of weakness? James Powell thought so too, until he hit rock bottom. Growing up as a closeted gay Christian in the Evangelical Church, James faced immense religious trauma, spiritual abuse, and addiction. He believed he was broken and unlovable because of his sexual orientation. Fear of being outed kept him isolated and self-reliant, but this approach only deepened his struggles.
In this episode of 'This Little Light of Mine', James opens up about his journey towards healing. He shares how, by finding the courage to ask for help, he began to understand that he wasn't alone or broken. He discovered that childhood trauma doesn't just vanish; it evolves and continues to cause pain until we confront its roots. James' story is a powerful reminder that seeking support is not a sign of weakness but a step towards recovery.
He highlights how unexpected people and places provided the help he needed, showing that support can come from the most surprising sources. Throughout the episode, James introduces other individuals who found new meaning and purpose by accepting themselves and seeking help. This episode is a heartfelt exploration of the LGBTQ+ experience within the church, the importance of mental, emotional, and spiritual health, and the transformative power of facing inner struggles.
Whether you're dealing with similar issues or supporting someone who is, James' story offers hope and encouragement to prioritize your well-being by asking for help.
