My songs were very angry, they were just like 'you're screwing me and I want everyone to know.' So, they came from a victim standpoint. The songs that I started writing in my fifth year of sobriety became more about an issue that I was working through personally and how I would get through it. I've had to become a fan again, and that was shared to me by another alcoholic in this program who is a very successful musician. It's like being gifted something beyond measure if you can touch one person with the song you've written, you've done your job.
Scott S.'s story is one for the books. From a rough childhood marred by abuse and trauma, Scott found a temporary escape in alcohol and music during his teenage years. By 17, his drinking had spiraled out of control, prompting his newly sober father to drag him to AA meetings. Despite multiple attempts at sobriety, it wasn't until Scott hit rock bottom after a grueling music career that he truly committed to the AA program.
Nine years of sobriety were followed by a relapse, but Scott's determination led him back to the rooms of Alcoholics Anonymous. With the help of a sponsor and by sponsoring others, he rebuilt his life. The real kicker? Scott faced metastatic cancer late into his sobriety but refused to let it derail his progress.
This episode is a raw, unfiltered look at Scott's 20-year journey through the highs and lows of sobriety, offering hope and inspiration to anyone struggling with addiction.
