I feel lucky that I'd kind of had some training for when one of these bigger ones happened and, you know, they, maybe they give you somebody else to call or they give you a suggestion, Hey, call this person or, you know, Hey, why don't you go do this? Those are the kinds of things that help me stay sober through some of these things that feel like existential at the time.
Imagine facing bullies and academic hurdles from a young age, only to find solace in alcohol during your teens. This was Doug W.'s reality. Despite a childhood filled with potential, Doug's learning disability and short stature made school life tough, and bullies only added to his woes. Seeking an escape, he turned to alcohol in his early teens, which quickly became a coping mechanism. By high school and college, Doug's drinking had spiraled, leading to frequent binges and mounting consequences.
Yet, amidst his functional alcoholism, he managed to sustain a marriage and a career until his late twenties when everything started falling apart. At 28, after hitting rock bottom, Doug found his way to Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and began the hard work of recovery. Now, with 12 years of sobriety under his belt, Doug shares his journey with raw honesty.
He talks about the pivotal moments that brought him to AA and the profound changes the program has brought into his life. From regular meeting attendance to various service roles and unwavering commitment to his family and friends, Doug's story is one of resilience and transformation. His reflections on personal tragedies, the solace he found in the AA community, and the highs and lows of his sobriety journey offer hope and inspiration to anyone facing similar battles.
Doug's dedication to the AA program showcases the power of perseverance and the supportive network within the fellowship. Whether you're struggling with addiction or supporting someone who is, Doug's story is a powerful reminder that recovery is possible.
