Conquering Anger: Dr. Mike's Guide to the 4th Step

I can't have peace with god if I'm separated from god. And what we're talking about here for us, basically, is you go to the food store or you're disturbed if they don't have what you want, or you have to wait in line too long, or you can't get the cart fast enough, or you're driving and you're not making the turn right, or you're at work and somebody isn't doing what you want fast enough.
Anger can be a tough beast to tame, especially when you're on the path to recovery. In this episode of 'Experience the Big Book', Dr. Mike takes you through the 4th step of the AA program, focusing on how to break free from the grip of anger. He starts by explaining the purpose of the fourth step, which is all about addressing those pesky manifestations of self like resentment and fear. Dr.
Mike stresses that being thorough and honest is crucial here. The more you work on these steps, the clearer it becomes how self-centeredness can lead to poor choices. This understanding is key to developing discipline and avoiding past mistakes. Resentment, Dr. Mike points out, is a dangerous thing—it can sever your spiritual connection with God. He explains that resentment often comes from unrealistic expectations or the belief that the world and its people are always wrong.
But letting others' actions affect your relationship with God is a choice you don't have to make. Deep resentments can block you from experiencing God's light, potentially leading you back to alcohol. So, what's the antidote? Dr. Mike suggests praying for love, tolerance, pity, and patience. Anger is a powerful emotion that can wreck your day and disrupt your peace with God.
By asking God to help you let go of anger, you can shift your focus to gratitude and positivity. Dr. Mike also emphasizes the power of perception. How you view your problems can either ruin your day or help you see things in a more positive light. By focusing on gratitude and the good things in life, you can overcome resentment and anger, paving the way for a more fulfilling life.
Tune in to this episode of 'Experience the Big Book' to learn how to apply these 4th step instructions and find freedom from anger.
