Sarah B.: A Seven-Year Journey from Alcoholism to Sobriety

I had a spiritual experience where I heard the voice of what I believe is God tell me you will die if you keep drinking. And it was enough to make me stop just hearing this voice one morning, while I was in front of my refrigerator hungover searching for something to drink, and that following Tuesday I went to AA for the first time, picked up a desire chip on my own without being told to go or court ordered to go, and I have maintained continuous sobriety ever since that moment.
Sarah B.'s story is one of resilience and transformation. She started drinking and smoking marijuana in her early teens, fitting right in with her peers. Despite excelling in school, Sarah quickly became a functional alcoholic, often drinking to the point of blacking out. What began as social drinking soon turned into isolated self-medication, accelerating her descent into severe alcoholism. Her life took a dramatic turn when she became pregnant during her senior year of college.
The birth of her child and a subsequent short-lived marriage didn't stop her from drinking; in fact, her addiction only deepened. Facing divorce and the threat of losing custody of her child, Sarah continued to drink even during her split-custody time. Court orders and family pleas fell on deaf ears. It wasn't until Sarah had a profound spiritual experience—where she felt a divine warning that she would die if she continued drinking—that she decided to seek help.
She turned to Alcoholics Anonymous and has maintained sobriety for seven years since that pivotal moment. In this episode, host Howard L. dives into Sarah's journey, discussing the impact of addiction on family and relationships, the role of spirituality in recovery, and the supportive power of the AA community. Sarah also shares the importance of service work and attending quality meetings in maintaining sobriety. Her story is a testament to the commitment, honesty, and community support needed to overcome addiction.
