I heard, I felt for the longest time that nobody had done the things that I had done or felt the way I had felt or thought the way. It was like for Nine Months I had not thought about putting alcohol on my system and the only craving I had was for a piece of cherry pie.
Leigh P.'s story begins in the lively pubs of London, where underage drinking was a casual, almost expected part of life. Growing up, Leigh quickly found himself enjoying more than just a pint or two. As he moved into adulthood, his drinking escalated far beyond what his friends were doing. Despite his success in school and a promising career in the oil industry, Leigh's nights were filled with blackouts and binge drinking, making him a classic 'functional alcoholic'.
After relocating to Texas, Leigh's drinking habits followed him across the ocean. His first marriage didn't survive the strain of his alcoholism, and the term 'functional' soon no longer applied. A particularly harrowing two-week blackout was the wake-up call Leigh needed. Strapped to a hospital bed, he finally acknowledged the depth of his problem.
