Retreat's Fall Fest: Real Stories of Recovery and Community
Lots and lots of people get sober. People hear about folks that go in and out of rehab, and by the way, I mean certainly a big number, but it's not the biggest number I've heard.
Imagine a place where the struggles and triumphs of addiction recovery are celebrated with heartfelt stories and genuine support. That's what Retreat's Fall Fest in Akron, Ohio, is all about. Hosted by Recovery Radio and sponsored by Retreat Premier Addiction Treatment Centers, this annual event brings together alumni, staff, and supporters to share their experiences and insights on the journey to sobriety.
Peter Shore, founder and CEO of Retreat, passionately spoke about the vital role of addiction treatment centers in addressing the opioid epidemic. He emphasized the need to shift attitudes towards viewing addiction as a disease and highlighted the importance of harm reduction and keeping people alive. Shore's words resonate deeply, especially when he remarked, 'Lots and lots of people get sober.
People hear about folks that go in and out of rehab, and by the way, I mean certainly a big number, but it's not the biggest number I've heard'. The event was a tapestry of real-life stories from Retreat's alumni. These brave individuals opened up about their battles with addiction, trauma, and the constant fight to stay sober. One alumna shared her determination, saying, 'For me, that meant I'm going to do this one time and not do it again.
And if I was going to make that big of a change in my life and admit that I was a real alcoholic, then I had to admit that I was going to do everything I had to do to make sure I never go through this'. The importance of support networks in long-term recovery was a recurring theme throughout the event. Alumni spoke about how these networks have been crucial in their sobriety journeys.
One alumna's words were particularly poignant: 'I'm going to meetings every day and I'm just... I really feel different this time, because for me anymore, drinking it was just... And you know, I just do not feel well anymore'. Retreat's Fall Fest serves as a powerful reminder of the incredible work being done by addiction treatment centers like Retreat. It's an event that underscores the significance of community, connection, and recovery.
