I feel like the one thing that I can say is just progress, not perfection. Because listen, you can tell yourself, be nice to yourself a hundred different ways, a hundred different languages and other ways, but we're still not going to get it.
What does it take to let go of old defenses and truly embrace a sober life? In this episode, Steve Martin-Bennet sits down with Kevin, who shares his inspiring journey of living a queer and sober life. Kevin opens up about the joy he finds in being present and appreciating life without alcohol, a journey that started just under two years ago.
He reflects on how his upbringing and cultural background influenced his relationship with drinking and discusses the challenges he faced when he decided to quit. From the initial struggle with negative self-talk to the ongoing process of 'putting down the sword'—letting go of defensiveness and embracing vulnerability—Kevin's story is both heartfelt and empowering. He talks about the pride and freedom he now feels as a member of the queer community, having moved from a place of shame to self-acceptance.
Kevin also offers practical advice for those in early recovery, emphasizing the importance of self-awareness, progress over perfection, and finding your own path to sobriety. Whether you're at the start of your sober journey or looking for ways to deepen your recovery, Kevin's insights provide a beacon of hope and encouragement.
