Paul himself faced liver disease years into his AA recovery, a consequence of his earlier substance abuse. Three years ago, he found himself at death's door with zero liver function and two failed transplant attempts. But in a dramatic turn of events, a last-minute liver transplant, followed by multiple surgeries and 17 days in the ICU, saved his life. Today, Paul is more active than ever in his recovery program.
He attributes his survival to his Higher Power and the unwavering support of his AA fellowship.
