Haiti is still the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. And you've heard me say that a couple of times. And it's something that I don't shy away from because it is the truth.
What drives a couple to leave the comforts of home and dedicate their lives to serving others in a foreign land? Meet Paul and Bethany Perissien, the heart and soul behind Mission Haiti, a non-profit organization based in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Their story is one of deep connection, unwavering commitment, and remarkable self-sacrifice. Paul's bond with Haiti began early. Born in Haiti, he moved to the United States at ten but never forgot his roots.
After earning a degree in education from Florida State University, Paul felt a pull to return and make a difference in his homeland. Bethany, originally from Sioux Falls, South Dakota, graduated with a biology degree from Palm Beach Atlantic University. Their paths crossed in an unexpected place—a Red Lobster restaurant where they both worked as waiters. They married in 2012 and soon embarked on a life-changing mission.
From 2014 to 2021, the Perissiens lived full-time in Haiti with their children, immersing themselves in the community and working tirelessly to bring sustainable development and hope. Paul now serves as the Executive Director of Mission Haiti, guiding its efforts to improve the lives of the Haitian people. Bethany plays a crucial role alongside him, contributing her skills and passion to the cause.
