Parkinson's Cafe: A Community Hub for Social and Cultural Connection
We're there to support each other and get to know each other, and we become friends and stay in touch.
Imagine a place where people living with Parkinson's can gather, share experiences, and enjoy cultural activities. That's exactly what the Parkinson Cafe offers. In this episode of 'Pathways to Parkinson's Relief', host Robert Rodgers chats with Lynn Schramek, the founder of the Parkinson Cafe, and Brad, a participant who has found solace and support through the program.
Lynn shares her journey from attending draining support group meetings to creating a vibrant, uplifting environment where people with Parkinson's and their care partners can connect. Running from October to April in upstate New York since 2009 and in Florida since 2012, the Parkinson Cafe hosts monthly events that bring together about 40-50 members for social, cultural, and intellectual interactions. Brad talks about his own challenges with Parkinson's and how a tailored program helped him manage his symptoms better.
Together, they highlight the importance of community support and engaging activities in enhancing the quality of life for those living with Parkinson's. This episode is a testament to the power of connection and the positive impact of community initiatives like the Parkinson Cafe.
