Norm Wielsh: Finding Redemption Through Faith and Recovery
Sometimes the hardest thing about getting someone into recovery is getting them to agree to treatment.
Norm Wielsh’s life story is a powerful testament to the human spirit's resilience and the transformative power of faith. As a police officer for 26 years, Norm spent 16 of those years as an undercover narcotic agent, rising to the rank of Commander. His career was marked by numerous traumatic experiences, leading to a diagnosis of work-related PTSD.
In 1998, Norm’s life took another turn when he was diagnosed with a neuro-muscular disease, resulting in the loss of mobility in his hands and feet. After enduring 30 surgeries, he developed an addiction to opioids. The spiral didn’t stop there—his daughter’s serious illness and a failed suicide attempt pushed him further into despair, eventually landing him in federal prison. But Norm’s story doesn’t end in darkness. In prison, he found a new path through faith.
He began studying theology and Christian counseling, earning advanced degrees while behind bars. Today, Norm dedicates his life to helping other law enforcement officers who are suffering from trauma. In this episode of 'The Addiction Podcast - Point of No Return', Norm shares how Christ-centered healing played a crucial role in his recovery. He discusses the importance of addressing the root causes of addiction and the unique challenges faced by those in law enforcement.
Norm’s journey underscores the need for better mental health support for officers and highlights the role spirituality can play in recovery.
