Oct-sober Recovery Podcast
From the outset, the conversation rips right into the topic of anniversary’s because I wanted to tell everybody how good I am at remembering people’s sobriety dates 😜 Mark shares some of his story and talks about his “weird”relationship with alcohol even before he started drinking I love Marks illustration about when he gets in trouble , he reaches for the thing that is closest to support him and all the things that he reached for before he got sober were the things that would kill him. Now that he’s sober , he keeps his 12 step program and the fellowship within reach...as close to him as possible 🙏 So college happened an a career started where drinking was popular and frequent. When Mark started to travel for work, this was when the drinking really took off. Paint thinner in the Folgers coffee can....extremely imaginative. “Righteous anger is a luxury the alcoholic can not afford” We talk about many topics including sponsorship, getting to know people as a newcomer sober friends and small groups. Our families come up in conversation and of course it goes without saying (why am I saying it then) we are both so very grateful to still have our families in our lives.

Mark E. Opens Up: From Struggles to Sobriety on Oct-sober Recovery Podcast
“I will pick up a drink again if I start to believe that it's ok, and the only way I'm going to start to believe that it's ok is if I stop going to meetings. And you know that's why I go to meetings.”
AJ Butler sits down with his long-time friend Mark E. for a raw and heartfelt chat about their journeys to sobriety. Mark’s story is unique right from the start, with a 'weird' relationship with alcohol even before he started drinking. He shares how, in moments of trouble, he used to reach for harmful things that ultimately did more damage. Now, his go-to support is his 12-step program and the fellowship that comes with it.
Mark takes us through his college years and early career, where drinking was the norm and often encouraged. Things escalated when he began traveling for work, leading to some truly imaginative yet dangerous behaviors, like hiding paint thinner in a coffee can. A powerful quote from the episode is Mark's realization that 'righteous anger is a luxury the alcoholic cannot afford'.
The conversation touches on many key topics including sponsorship, building connections as a newcomer, and the crucial role of sober friends and small groups. Family also comes into play, highlighting how sobriety impacts relationships and the importance of gratitude. Mark’s journey is a testament to the power of accountability and honesty in recovery. He discusses how these elements helped him repair relationships and stay committed to personal growth.
The episode wraps up with a poignant reminder that sobriety is a daily practice requiring ongoing effort and dedication. Tune in for an episode filled with candid moments, practical advice, and a lot of heart.
