Dr. Sará Yafah King: From Personal Trauma to Social Justice Advocate

One of the most powerful things that we can do is connect to our awareness first and foremost, and say what is alive here in this body, because awareness is a faculty of the human experience that is always present, it's always there to be connected to, and one of the easiest ways that we can connect to the fact that we are aware is through the breath, and I think that's incredible.
When Dr. Sará Yafah King was just six years old, she watched her brother get arrested, sentenced, and incarcerated. This early experience sparked a lifelong quest to understand the roots of social injustice and find ways to heal from its wounds. In this episode of the Prison Yoga Project Podcast, Dr. King, a neuroscientist, political and learning scientist, medical anthropologist, social entrepreneur, public speaker, and mother, takes us on her journey of redefining social justice through awareness and connection. Dr.
King's spiritual journey began in her childhood as she grappled with the abrupt transition from innocence to harsh reality. She questioned the system that imprisoned her brother and felt a deep sense of being trapped herself. These early experiences planted the seeds for her later work in meditation and healing practices. Dr. King believes that true justice is not punitive but rooted in our shared humanity, or what she calls 'our shared interbeing'. In this episode, Dr.
King shares how her meditation practices helped her find a path to healing and resilience. She discusses the profound impact of incarceration on families and communities, particularly those of color, and emphasizes the need for healing practices to address trauma. Her work with youth communities of color highlights the power of education and activism in creating lasting change. Dr. King’s story is not just about personal healing but also about using her experiences to help others navigate their own journeys.
Her insights offer a fresh perspective on social justice, making this episode both inspiring and deeply informative. Whether you're interested in meditation, social justice, or the intersection of both, Dr. King's story will leave you with much to ponder. Tune in to hear how Dr. King is redefining social justice and learn about the transformative power of awareness and connection.
