Recovery is a challenge every single day. You be the change. And some days I don't feel like it. Because I'm tired and some days I'm irritable and some days my son still pisses me off. Yeah. I love him. But, know it's it's reality so every day I have to choose that objective and the goal and uh and that's the hardest part but I but I still do it every day.
What happens when a mother's love is tested by her child's addiction? Lisa Gennosa, a physician's assistant, speaker, mom, wife, dog lover, and author of 'Incurable Hope: A Memoir for Coping with a Loved One's Addiction', knows this journey all too well. In this heartfelt episode of 'The Way Out', Lisa opens up about her struggle with her son's substance use and how it led her to confront her own role in the family disease.
Her story is one of transformation, turning pain into purpose. Lisa's advocacy work spans from providing care in her community to educating law enforcement and medical students on crisis intervention. Her book aims to break down the complex language of addiction, offering practical resources for those facing similar battles. She shares her personal recovery routine—working out, eating healthy, getting good sleep, and spending time with her dogs—as a testament to the daily effort required for recovery.
Lisa's greatest achievement has been finding purpose in helping others navigate their own recovery journeys. She speaks candidly about the non-linear path of forgiveness, both towards herself and others. Her recovery song recommendation, 'When She Cries' by Restless Heart, holds deep personal significance, reminding her of her son's plea for help during tough times. Lisa's message is clear: keep evolving and never give up.
Tune in to hear her inspiring story and gain valuable insights into the challenges and triumphs of addiction recovery.
