Miles' Journey: Battling Addiction and Body Image in the LGBTQ+ Community

I got more flack for being overweight than I ever did for being gay in high school. That's when I started to realize that it just became a lot, and I also started to realize in high school that I had like this abnormal, like way of kind of needing validation from people.
Imagine feeling more judged for your weight than for your sexuality. That's the reality Miles faced when he first arrived at the Pride Institute in 2013. Addicted to Adderall to cope with body dysmorphia, he felt out of place among others battling meth addiction. Despite initial struggles, Miles found a supportive community that helped him confront his insecurities and addiction head-on.
In this episode of 'Proud Voices', co-hosts Kaylee Hoaby and Luke Miller sit down with Miles, who has been sober since September 9, 2021. He opens up about his journey, sharing how societal pressures and personal battles led him to substance abuse. 'I got way more flack for being overweight than I ever did for being gay in high school', Miles recalls, highlighting the unique challenges LGBTQ+ individuals face regarding body image and self-acceptance. Miles' path wasn't straightforward.
After his initial treatment, he found himself drawn to meth, a drug often linked to sex within the LGBTQ+ community. However, for Miles, it wasn't about sex; it was another way to escape his insecurities. His story serves as a poignant reminder that addiction doesn't discriminate and can affect anyone, regardless of their background or circumstances. Throughout his journey, Miles discovered the importance of having a support system.
He credits his sobriety to the people who stood by him, even during the darkest times. 'I always say that wasn't the most addicted to drugs I've ever been, but that was the worst time in my life because I was so alone there self-harm, nobody around', he reflects. This episode is a testament to the resilience and strength required to overcome addiction and find self-acceptance.
It's a powerful narrative that underscores the unique hurdles LGBTQ+ individuals face and the vital role of supportive communities like the Pride Institute in helping them achieve sobriety. Tune in to hear Miles' inspiring story and gain insights into the complexities of addiction and recovery within the LGBTQ+ community.
