samsn's STRONGER
Male survivors often try to forget or bury their experiences of abuse and use a range of strategies to block out the memories and feelings. These can look like drug and alcohol use, gambling, workaholism, and sex addictions… but frequently, they don't make the link between what happened to them as children or young guys, and their current ways of managing their life. The tactics that abusers use mean that survivors often carry heavy legacies, like being made to feel complicit and responsible for aspects of the abuse, and being forced to keep the abuse secret in order to protect others. This often results in feelings of powerlessness, anger, shame and self-blame. Managing these burdens requires - in the words of psychologists Sophie Reid and Jace Cannon Brookes - “ingenious survival”. The survivors in this episode share some of their survival strategies. Surviving and Thriving: Male Survivors Share Their Healing Stories
“I have picked my mantra up into it: we can be better. That's my quest for social justice: that our lives can be better if we share our stories and our lives with each other.”
How do male survivors of childhood sexual abuse find their way to healing? In this episode of Samsn's STRONGER podcast, several brave men open up about their pasts and the strategies they’ve used to cope with their trauma. From battling addiction to grappling with feelings of shame and self-blame, these survivors reveal the heavy burdens they’ve carried and the ingenious ways they’ve managed to survive.
Psychologists Sophie Reid and Jace Cannon Brookes provide expert insights into these coping mechanisms, explaining how abusers' tactics often leave survivors feeling complicit and responsible for the abuse. But it’s not all about the struggle. The episode also highlights the transformative power of community and connection. By sharing their stories, these men are breaking free from the cycle of secrecy and shame. They discuss alternative healing methods like yoga and somatic therapy, which have helped them reclaim their lives.
Featuring voices from SAMSN and clinical experts, this episode is a testament to resilience and the possibility of recovery. It's a powerful listen for anyone seeking to understand the impact of childhood sexual abuse on males and the paths to healing.
