Ernie G.: Trading a High-Flying Life for Sobriety
I would thank god, you know, for the offer and say, no, I don't need to sprinkle anything in my life to make it better and I have the best family of friends in the whole wide world.
Ernie G. had it all—or so it seemed. Fast cars, flashy clothes, and nights spent in glittering nightclubs were his norm, all funded by a high-paying job and a side hustle dealing cocaine. But as his alcohol and drug use spiraled into addiction, his life began to crumble. Accountability to his career, family, and friends vanished. Things reached a breaking point when he was arrested in a DEA sting and sent to federal prison.
Upon release, he avoided cocaine but found solace in alcohol, which only worsened his situation. His marriage fell apart, leading to separation from his wife and daughter, and eventually, divorce. Left alone and still addicted, Ernie sought refuge in nightclubs, but the relief he once found there had vanished. It wasn't until a hungover visit to his biggest business client that he had a moment of clarity.
This client paid for Ernie’s inpatient treatment, setting him on the path to recovery. Three AA members, including his current sponsor, guided him through a rigorous program of hard work, prayer, and service. Today, nearly 16 years sober, Ernie reflects on the journey that mended his relationship with his daughter and ex-wife and transformed his life. He talks about the importance of accountability, making amends, and the joy of living a sober life.
Ernie also underscores the significance of fellowship and community in maintaining sobriety. His story is a testament to the power of AA in turning lives around.
