Hannah Bott: From Pageants to Mental Health Advocacy

When we talk about recovery with mental health conditions, that does not mean perfection, it just means having the tools to be able to get you out of those dark times.
Have you ever wondered how someone can transform their personal battles into a mission to help others? In this episode of 'Behind the Mind', Kevin Meiselman chats with Hannah Bott, the dynamic outreach coordinator for NAMI North Texas. Hannah's journey through anxiety, depression, and a traumatic experience as a victim of sexual violence is both heart-wrenching and inspiring.
Despite these challenges, she has emerged as a beacon of hope and resilience, using her platform to break the stigma surrounding mental health. Hannah opens up about her childhood, where she often felt like an outsider, and her struggles continued into college. She shares a raw and vulnerable moment when she googled ways to die by suicide, yet still continued down a path of self-destruction.
It wasn't until a friend urged her to change her perspective and she received support from her therapist that she began to see a way out. In addition to her work with NAMI, Hannah has been competing in beauty pageants since she was 14. She recently participated in the Mrs. Texas Beauty Pageant, winning 1st place in the fitness category. More importantly, she uses the stage to advocate for mental health awareness.
Hannah discusses how sufficient parental support played a crucial role in her recovery and how she now helps other volunteers spread awareness and education about mental health. The episode wraps up with Hannah’s powerful message on what recovery truly means. It's not about achieving perfection but about having the tools to navigate through dark times. This conversation is a must-listen for anyone looking to understand the importance of support and the impact of shifting perspectives in mental health recovery.
