Bethany Stevens: Advocating for Sobriety and Disability Inclusion

I'm finding that a lot of spaces where I go to talk to other sober people, which we know is really pivotal to have community, to talk to other people, because we are in an alcohol saturated culture. And people just really want a place where they can talk about ableism and how they get laughed at when they get chips for the way they walk.
Ever wondered how to be a better ally to those with disabilities in the sobriety community? In this engaging episode of 'Recovery Rocks', co-hosts Lisa Smith and Tawny Lara sit down with Bethany Stevens, a queer, femme lawyer and sociology Ph.D. student who leads support groups for the sober disability community. Bethany shares her personal journey, offering insights into the unique challenges faced by those with disabilities in recovery.
She emphasizes the importance of community and allyship, providing practical tips on how able-bodied individuals can support their peers and combat ableism. The conversation isn't all serious, though. Bethany also brings a fun twist to the episode with 'The Music Minute', where she dives into her love for pop icons like Cardi B and Rihanna. This blend of deep discussion and light-hearted moments makes for a well-rounded and engaging listen.
Bethany's dedication to advocacy is evident as she talks about her various platforms, including her YouTube channel focused on sex and disability and her Disabled and Sober support group on Facebook. Whether you're looking for inspiration, practical advice, or just a good story, this episode offers something for everyone. Tune in to hear Bethany's compelling story and learn how you can be a better ally in the sober disability community.
It's a conversation filled with hope, support, and a touch of pop culture flair.
