Skip Sams: Rediscovering Music and Purpose After Addiction
My voice is different, but I am different. My dreams are different, but I am striving for a different life.
Imagine losing your passion and then finding it again in the most unexpected way. That’s Skip Sams' story. Once a thriving composer and multimedia producer, Skip’s life took a dark turn when addiction to crystal meth and alcohol overshadowed his love for music. He even shut down his recording studio to dive deeper into substance abuse. But, as fate would have it, music never left his side. It was like an old friend, patiently waiting for him to return.
Skip’s journey is not just about overcoming addiction; it’s about rekindling the fire within. With over 16 years of sobriety under his belt, he’s now the Founder and Head Coach of Sober On Stage. His mission? To help musicians who’ve lost their spark reconnect with their inner music and share their light with the world. Diagnosed with bipolar disorder and HIV, Skip has faced more than his fair share of challenges, but he’s defied them all.
In this episode, Skip opens up about the day he decided to abandon his music career for drugs, and how he found his way back. He shares how spirituality and meditation played a crucial role in his recovery, helping him to let go of the past and embrace the present. Today, he’s on a mission to inspire 10,000 musicians to record and perform again by 2030. Skip’s story is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit.
It’s a reminder that no matter how far you’ve fallen, you can always rise again. Whether you’re struggling with addiction, know someone who is, or just need a dose of inspiration, Skip’s journey offers hope and a path forward.
