I've been doing this gig a long time. There's a reason that we're survivors - just to carry the message to the addict who still suffers. My whole purpose today is to help other people.
Angie's story is one of those that sticks with you. Growing up in Rockhampton, she always felt like the odd one out. Her parents, who arrived in Australia in the late 1950s, faced a lot of racism, and Angie often found herself on the receiving end of it. While her sisters excelled in school, Angie was labeled the 'naughty kid', often ending up in the principal's office.
She distanced herself from her family and rejected her cultural roots, feeling ashamed of her background. This sense of not belonging led her down a dark path of substance abuse, seeking solace in heroin. Angie didn't just stop at using; she got involved in stealing, shoplifting, and even robbing her own father. But her story doesn't end there. Angie's journey through addiction was marked by chronic relapses and severe depression.
However, when she found Narcotics Anonymous, she discovered a community that understood her struggles. It wasn't an easy road to recovery, but Angie's resilience and determination shine through. Her story is raw, honest, and a testament to the power of finding one's tribe and rebuilding life from the ground up.
