Jill Stark: From Anxiety to Sobriety and Beyond

I've proven to myself that that I'm not very good at that. Um, unlike I'm catching up with my friends, there's a group of eight of us and we have to catch up in a park at The Weekend because we can't fit all of us in one house under these current rules in Victoria. But if I was trying to moderate my drinking in that environment, it's really hard, because everyone around you is is saying: just have one more, or even, if they're not, once you've had one or two drinks, your ability to manage your inhibitions and manage your impulse control is really diminished because you're impaired.
Ever wondered how anxiety and alcohol intertwine? Jill Stark, a best-selling author and award-winning journalist, dives deep into this connection on 'After Alcohol'. Known for her book 'High Sobriety: My Year Without Booze', Jill shares her rollercoaster journey of giving up alcohol, facing media attention, and ultimately finding herself. But it wasn't all smooth sailing.
Jill opens up about how her dream life crumbled, leading her to write 'Happy Never After', a book that challenges the quick-fix approach to mental health. In this episode, she talks about her decision to quit drinking again and how it profoundly impacted her anxiety. Jill’s candid conversation covers the tricky balance of moderating alcohol in social settings, the societal pressure to drink, and the importance of self-care in recovery.
If you’re curious about the link between booze and mental health or looking for inspiration to rethink your relationship with alcohol, this chat with Jill Stark is a must-listen. Dive into an honest discussion about emotions, vulnerability, and breaking down the stigmas surrounding sobriety.
