Rita's Journey: From Resistance to Renewal at MARR

I was now an employee. I think that's a perfect position for you because, Karen, she was the second guest on our podcast, the second episode, and she said she remembered when she came into Mar. I saw Rita and she was just so happy to see me and so welcoming.
Imagine feeling like you don't belong anywhere, then discovering a place where you can truly be yourself. That's exactly what happened to Rita Garland. She had a preconceived notion of what treatment would be like and was convinced she wouldn't fit in. But she was wrong. In this episode of 'Journeys of Hope', Rita opens up about her transformation from a struggling alcoholic to a valued staff member at MARR's Women's Recovery Center.
Rita's story is one of resistance turning into acceptance. Initially, she was skeptical about treatment, burdened by the shame and stigma that often come with addiction. Her relationships were strained, and she felt isolated. However, taking the risk to be herself in treatment led to unexpected joy and a sense of belonging. Rita began laughing harder than she had in years and found herself at home among others who understood her struggles.
Through counseling and therapy, Rita started to see her own worth. The support she received from her peers was a game-changer, helping her to rebuild her self-esteem and find a new purpose. She transitioned from an alumni volunteer to a long-term staff member, embodying the spirit of recovery and community support. Rita's journey highlights the importance of self-acceptance and finding a supportive community in the recovery process.
Her experience shows that feeling at home can be transformative, offering a beacon of hope for anyone grappling with addiction. Tune in to hear Rita's heartfelt story and find inspiration in her path to recovery.
