Dhom R.: From Gang Life to 29 Years of Sobriety

I think I'm, I'm one of the best recovery alcoholics in the world, simply because you know.
Ever wondered how someone can turn their life around after years of chaos and violence? Meet Dhom R., whose journey from a troubled youth in a poor Filipino village to 29 years of sobriety is nothing short of remarkable. At just 14, Dhom was already entangled in gang activities and heavy drinking, a combination that led him down a dangerous path filled with crime and near-death experiences, including games of Russian roulette.
A move to London offered no escape, as his alcoholism only intensified amidst the city's vibrant pub culture. His violent behavior got him banned from numerous establishments and strained his family life to the breaking point, leading to his wife leaving him and taking their son. But hitting rock bottom became the catalyst for change. A moment of clarity during a blackout, spurred by a scrolling advertisement, led Dhom to Alcoholics Anonymous.
In this episode, Dhom opens up about the challenges he faced in early sobriety, especially feeling isolated as one of the few people of color in AA meetings. He talks about how the principles of AA, anonymity, and community support played crucial roles in his recovery. Through spiritual awakening and service, Dhom has transformed into a beacon of hope for others struggling with addiction.
His story is a powerful reminder that it's never too late to change and that sobriety can lead to profound personal growth and meaningful contributions to the community.
