Most people who suffer from anxiety disorder and depression can get help. And so that's the main message. But it is a serious disease and it can be terminal. And not everybody does well. We all need to be helping each other. There's a double sadness with a suicide. It's the loss of my daughter. It's also just knowing how much she suffered.
Grab your favorite coffee or tea and settle in for a heartfelt chat with Dr. Mark Wilson, the former Health Officer of Jefferson County. In this episode, Dr. Wilson opens up about his remarkable journey, from establishing the Recovery Resource Center (RRC) to coping with personal tragedy. The RRC was born out of a pressing need to address the surge in opioid-related deaths in Jefferson County, offering a centralized resource for those grappling with substance use disorders. Dr.
Wilson's passion for public health and his collaboration with the Addiction Prevention Coalition shine through as he discusses the center's impact since its inception in 2017. But the conversation takes a deeply personal turn when Dr. Wilson talks about the loss of his daughter, Laura, who faced mental health challenges and tragically died by suicide in December 2022. He shares how this profound loss has shaped his outlook and reinforced his commitment to mental health advocacy.
As he transitions into retirement, Dr. Wilson reflects on his career, the lessons learned, and his plans to remain connected to public health and patient care. This episode is a poignant reminder of the power of community support, education, and resilience in overcoming life's toughest challenges.
