Ally Towns: Championing Mental Health and Embracing Vulnerability

It's my belief that everybody has stuff going on like absolutely everybody.
Meet Ally Towns, a young woman on a mission to change the world through mental health advocacy. In this heartfelt episode of 'Broken Open: the podcast', host Maureen Towns sits down with her daughter Ally to discuss her journey from self-harm to becoming a vocal supporter of mental health awareness. Ally is currently training to be a Child and Youth Care Counsellor at Mt Royal University in Calgary, and her passion for helping others stems from her own struggles.
She believes everyone has their own battles and that it's crucial to normalize these conversations. Ally opens up about her positive experiences with exposure therapy, a method that has helped her learn to truly feel her feelings rather than bury them. She stresses the importance of creating safe spaces for people to share their stories without fear of judgment or exploitation.
But she also warns against the dangers of sensationalizing mental health struggles for personal gain, advocating instead for genuine, supportive dialogue. The conversation also delves into the complexities of planning interventions and understanding borderline personality disorder. Maureen and Ally touch on how the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted mental health, adding another layer to the challenges many are already facing.
This episode is a candid and insightful look at the realities of mental health advocacy, filled with practical advice and personal anecdotes. Whether you're dealing with similar issues or supporting someone who is, Ally's story offers a beacon of hope and a call to embrace vulnerability. Tune in to hear more about how Ally is making a difference and why sharing our struggles can lead to profound healing.
