Voices of Change: A Candid Conversation on Race and Recovery

The hope that I have is that for the next generation, we are able to destigmatize mental illness and destigmatize pain, that we can, as people of color, experience pain and that pain can be treated.
What happens when you bring together a group of inspiring individuals to talk about the intersection of race and addiction recovery? You get a conversation that's both eye-opening and hopeful. In this episode, Workit Health counselor Chelsea Chang is joined by Chris Marshall of Sans Bar, Recovery Coach Nyla Christian, and Frederick Shegog of The Message. Together, they dive into the unique challenges faced by people of color in the world of addiction recovery.
They don't just skim the surface; they get into the nitty-gritty of health disparities, systemic racism, and the criminalization of Black and brown communities in healthcare. Chris Marshall poignantly shares, 'prior to my moment of clarity, my life was a pandemic', encapsulating the struggle many face. Nyla Christian emphasizes the need for representation, not just as patients but as leaders and supporters within the recovery community.
Frederick Shegog brings a hopeful note, believing that the next generation can destigmatize mental illness and pain among people of color. This episode isn't just about identifying problems; it's about finding solutions. The panelists stress the importance of investing in Black-owned businesses and organizations and listening to Black experiences. If you're looking for a conversation that blends personal stories with broader societal insights, this episode is a must-listen.
It's a heartfelt discussion that offers both empathy and actionable steps towards better support and resources for people of color in recovery.
