Austin Reed: From Health Struggles to Media Stardom and Sobriety
I thought I needed alone time when he died, but I needed actually to talk to people.
Meet Austin Reed, a man who has faced more than his fair share of life's curveballs. Diagnosed with cystic fibrosis at just three years old, Austin was told he might not make it past his teenage years. Add to that the challenges of ADHD and a family history of addiction and mental health issues, and you have a recipe for a tough road ahead. Yet, Austin's story is one of resilience and triumph.
In this episode of 'Knockin' Doorz Down', host Jason LaChance dives into Austin's incredible journey from battling these health issues to becoming a successful TV and radio personality. Despite the grim prognosis and early struggles with focus and anxiety, Austin found solace in broadcasting. By age nine, he had his own studio in his parents' basement, creating shows for public access TV. His passion for journalism only grew, leading him to a career as a morning anchor at 18.
However, the pressures of life led Austin down a dark path of addiction to prescription pain medication. This addiction resulted in two DUIs, a broken nose, and strained relationships. But Austin didn't let that be the end of his story. With the support of his girlfriend and the help of suboxone, he managed to turn his life around. Today, Austin uses his platform to break the stigma around addiction and mental health.
He shares his story to show that no matter how dire the circumstances, positive change is possible. If you're looking for a tale of hope, resilience, and the power of finding your passion, this episode is a must-listen.
