Running Against the Odds: Liz Fanco's Journey from Overweight to Marathoner
I'm not wealthy enough to write a check and provide clean drinking water for someone else, but I have two feet that work, that I can move and regardless of whether I'm running a six minute mile or whether I'm walking a minute mile, I can move my feet.
Imagine being asked by your kids to run a half marathon when you've never even jogged a mile. That's the challenge Liz Fanco faced, a mother of eight from Caledonia, Michigan. Liz had been overweight her entire life, but she didn't let that stop her. Inspired by her children's request and the chance to support World Vision's clean water initiative, Liz took on the daunting task of running thousands of miles over three years.
Despite her initial dislike for running, she found a way to 'hate running less' with the help of Todd Buckingham, Ph.D., an exercise physiologist at Mary Free Bed’s Sports Rehabilitation Performance Lab. Todd introduced her to the AlterG Anti-Gravity Treadmill, a game-changer that made running more manageable by reducing her body weight. With relentless determination and the unwavering support of her family, Liz transformed from a non-runner to a half marathon finisher.
This episode of 'Rehabilitationships' dives into Liz's inspiring journey, highlighting the transformative power of rehabilitation and the importance of a supportive environment. It's a testament to what can be achieved with motivation, accountability, and a bit of innovative technology. Tune in to hear how Liz defied the odds and found a new passion along the way.
