Angie Chaplin: From Rock Bottom to Mindful Leadership

Episode Overview

  • Angie Chaplin's inspiring journey from alcohol use disorder to becoming an alcohol-free industry leader and advocate
  • Integration of mindfulness into leadership practices through the five practices: modeling the way, inspiring a shared vision, challenging the process, enabling others to act for the collective good, and encouraging the heart
  • Importance of a non-judgmental approach to thoughts and encouragement of a daily gratitude practice
  • Vision for starting mindfulness education in preschool and integrating values conversations in junior high and high school
  • Advocacy for authenticity and self-actualization
I'm an advocate of authenticity. When we say 'fake it till you make it,' for an individual to reach that level of self-actualization, there's a pyramid. However, I do think that in order to find our authenticity, we have to know what doesn't work.
What would you do if faced with a life-or-death choice? Angie Chaplin found herself at this crossroads in February 2020 after her fifth hospitalization for severe alcohol use disorder. The medical team gave her two stark options: continue drinking and face certain death, or stop and give herself a chance at a better life. Angie chose the latter, diving into an intensive outpatient program that offered face-to-face counseling and group therapy.
But then COVID hit, and her lifeline of in-person support was abruptly cut off. Angie didn't let this setback derail her recovery. Instead, she turned to her background in leadership development, leaning on values like integrity, curiosity, clarity, connection, and love to guide her through the uncertainty. Today, Angie is not just sober; she's a sought-after consultant and speaker in mindful leadership.
Her story is a testament to the power of self-leadership and the impact of integrating mindfulness into everyday practices. Angie shares how she models the way, inspires a shared vision, challenges processes, enables others to act for the collective good, and encourages the heart—all while maintaining a non-judgmental approach to thoughts and practicing daily gratitude. She envisions a world where mindfulness education starts in preschool and values conversations are integrated into junior high and high school curriculums.
This episode is packed with valuable insights for anyone looking to grow personally and professionally, offering a roadmap for turning adversity into opportunity.
